Limitations on the types of plants you can grow in your aquaponics system – shallow grow beds work great for shallow rooted and/or short lived plants such as lettuces and greens, but won’t work for longer lived, deeply rooted plants such as indeterminate tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, melons, etc. this is both because shallow beds don’t provide the base of nutrients and bacteria required for the relatively long life of these plants nor do they provide the space for large root zones.. These include potatoes, beets, carrots, lettuces, and most other vegetables. in fact, this could be described as the main purpose for using a wicking bed in aquaponics. however, they are not a good option for trees and other perennials that tend to have deeper root structures. of course, you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment! try out some of the different wicking bed aquaponics techniques and choose the best one for your own needs.. When it comes to water content, cucumbers come crashing in at a massive 96 percent. this makes them the perfect plant for any aquaponics system. if you are looking for an aquaponics plant with some substance, cucumber is a great choice and comes in many different sizes and varieties..
