Fishless aquaponics. this is a technique for launching an aquaponics system without utilizing any fish. as i’ve already mentioned before, the fishes are placed in the tanks and they’ll generate ammonia right away, but since this technique doesn’t use any fish—not initially, at least—artificial ammonia is used in its place.. Fish cycling can take weeks for ammonia levels to increase to a desirable amount, whereas fishless cycling allow us to raise the ammonia levels to 0.5 ppm immediately. so, with fishless cycling we are able to jump start the nitrogen cycle by raising the ammonia to toxic levels without killing any organisms.. So while all of the bio-filter required ponics methods are “bio-ponics” not all bio-ponic methods would necessarily be aquaponics. people often get hung up about how say vermiponics might be better or cheaper than aquaponics or they want to do aquaponics without fish because they don’t want to worry about the fish dieing or something..
Aquaponics fishless cycling – revisited i first wrote about fishless cycling for aquaponics systems in november 2010 based on research i had done in cichlid raising, and since then it has become a generally accepted way to start up an aquaponics system.. Hi folks. the aquaponic barrel system has been running for about 2 months now & i've been using urine as the ammonia source to get the system cycled. must sa.... For my barrel ponics system i usually dosed with about 200 ml of aged urine but i didn’t need to dose every day. let the test kit be your guide. for my big system which had about 600 gallons of fish tank at the time of fishless cycling, i used between 200 and 500 ml per dose and again, i did not dose daily, only as the test kit indicated i.
